Behind the Mask with Myriah Rauch
Housekeeper, Environmental Services Team
Myriah Rauch is another invaluable member of our housekeeping team who has been with us for over a year! Read on as we go #BehindtheMask with Myriah to learn more about her role in keeping our patients’ safe, how the pandemic has changed her, and even what superpower she would choose!
What does your job entail?
My job consists of sustaining a sterile environment throughout the hospital. I clean discharged rooms on 2nd shift. That includes making sure the rooms are sterile and clean for the next patient who will occupy that room. They could be coming to the med/surg floor from the Emergency Department, going into ICU, going to the COVID unit, or they could be getting ready to deliver a baby on OB.
What do you like about working at Newberry Hospital?
The family-based environment. I enjoy working with the staff here at Newberry Hospital. I have the pleasure of working with some great individuals. Not just our housekeeping team, but nurses, techs, respiratory therapist, and several folks from other departments. I have made some great friends.
What is something about your job that people may not know?
How important our job as housekeepers here at the hospital really is. If we don’t follow the proper infection control guidelines, patients and the staff could become quite sick.
Where’s your favorite place in the world?
That’s simple! Being in the comfort of my own home with my husband, daughters, and all our fur babies.
If you could have any superpower what would it be?
The ability to shape-shift, of course! Because you can do so much with one superpower. Flying? Just turn into a bird. Breathing underwater? Just turn into a shark. Invisibility? Just turn into any object in a room and no one would ever know you’re there.
How have you found work-life balance during the Covid-19 pandemic?
I’m a creature of habit by nature. But since the Covid-19 pandemic, I have learned that things are always changing. You have to adapt to change. And learning to adapt has helped me to learn balance and try not to stress so much. It doesn’t always work. Because truthfully, working in a hospital is stressful in its self, but during a pandemic, it’s even more stressful!
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned during the pandemic?
To pray more…I have prayed for more people that I don’t even know since the pandemic than I have ever in my life. It has opened my heart like never before and it’s because I’m seeing it firsthand. This virus doesn’t discriminate at all. We are all humans with one common enemy right now. And we are all in this together regardless of our differences.
